Obituary: Gertrude Volino, 85

Gertrude I. Volino, 85, of Mineola, passed away on Feb 12. Loving mother of Philip (Cheryl), Linda (Michael) Zoccoli, Barbara, Michael (Rosina) and Benjamin (Sandra). Devoted grandmother of Kristi, Jodi, Justin Volino. Michael, Andrew and Robert Zoccoli. Kris, Jennifer, Kara Goodstein. Lani, Michael, Nicole Volino. Ashley, Benjamin, Brandon Volino. She worked for the Nassau County Police Department for more than 25 years.

 

Services were held at Cassidy Funeral Home at 156 Willis Ave. Volino was laid to rest at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Lawrence M. Egan Sr., 81, of Mineola died on March 19. Beloved husband of Luba for 54 years. Devoted father of Larry (Anne Marie) and Michael. Best grandfather ever to Jason, Joseph, Robert. Dear brother of William, Thomas, Marilyn Catania, Lorraine and pre-deceased by Frank, Robert, Dolores and Justine.

 

Egan was part of the Hampton Street PTA and was also a former Mineola School Board o trustee.  He helped Tom DiNapoli win his seat on the board (at that time, the youngest trustee in the State) when Tom was only 18 years old. Egan was a retired from FDNY fireman and worked at St. John’s University. In lieu of flowers, memorials to New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation at 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, NY 10475.

Obituary: Leo Tomei, 90

Mineola resident Leo James Tomei, 90, passed away on Jan. 17 at Winthrop-University Hospital. His graveside ceremony was March 21 at the Long Island National Cemetery.

 

This hard working ageless man was born in Manhattan on Dec. 27, 1923 (the year the first Yankee Stadium was built) but then moved to the Bronx. As a long time Yankees fan having met all the greats sports figures, he then served in the 27th General Hospital serving in Burma/India/China in WWII as a private in the U.S. Army.

Walter Paul Strauss, 79, of Clinton Twp., NJ, formerly of Mineola and father of Mayor Scott Strauss, passed away on April 4. Loving husband of Diane. Cherished father of Gary (Debra), Scott (Pat), Susan Beth Wyatt and Marc (Kelly). Devoted grandfather of Matthew (Diana) Strauss, Lindsay (Ryan) Backus, Bryan Strauss, Tiffany Strauss, Christopher Strauss, Thomas Schlagenhaft and Jason Strauss and great grandfather of Aidan and Landan Backus. Dear brother of Joanne Louise (Ralph) Bolen and the late Raymond. Proud U.S. Army Veteran. Member of the Annandale Hose Company, life member of Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corp, and former committee chairman and treasurer of Troop 45, Boy Scouts, Mineola.

Erin Carroll, daughter of Kathleen and Thomas, sister of Terra and Brendan passed away Jan. 24.  Erin was a graduate of Mineola High School class of 1996.  She was a professor at Roanoke College in Salem, VA.  There will be a memorial service on April 26 at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior at 132 Jefferson Ave. Mineola, NY

Obituary: Jane Veroxie-Nyquist

Jane Veroxie-Nyquist of Locust Valley, New York, formerly of Glen Cove, passed away on Saturday, April 5.  She was the beloved wife of the late Peter, who passed away on March 9, 2013.  Loving Aunt of Jaclyn, Steven, Mary Frances and the late Kathryn.  Niece of Doris and John Burns and Joan Mynarkiewicz.  Dear sister of the late William and Joseph.  Cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine. 

 

Jane was a devoted and integral part of Anton Community Newspapers in Mineola from 1976 to 1998.  She served as our technical support advisor, providing her expertise in writing computer programs to ensure smooth operation, and was promoted to Second Vice President in 1982, a position she held until her departure from the company in 1998.  In addition, several of her family members were employed at Anton at various times.  Jane always considered her co-workers as “family”.  Even after leaving her employment with Anton, Jane kept in touch with many of the employees, often getting together for dinner or meeting in the city to enjoy a Broadway play.  Her husband, Peter, was also an employee of Anton for many years and at the time of his death held the position of General Manager.

Edward William Murdock, 88, of Mineola, passed away on May 18. Beloved husband of Ruth for over 65 years. Loving father of Kathryn Murdock of Mineola and Patricia Murdock-Hansen (Michael) of Middletown, NJ. Edward was an active member of Nassau Nomads Chapter of the NCAA, Eisenhower Park Model Yacht Club, Troop Advisor to Boy Scouts Troop 45 of Mineola and Life Member of Free and Accepted Masons-Star of Hope Lodge. He served proudly as a tank operator in the Army in WWII.

 

Following his long career with Time-Life Inc., Murdock took up fishing and marquetry. In lieu of flowers, memorials to American Diabetes Assoc., North Shore Animal League or Wounded Warrior Foundation are appreciated. 



Obituary: Florence W. Schuler

Florence W. Schuler was born on July 16, 1921 and died on May 16, 2014. Her parents were Al and Elizabeth Westee. She was born in New York City and resided in Mineola for most of her life.  She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Walter C. Schuler and her sister, June Enzel.

She is survived by her two brothers, Al Westee and Donald Westee. She is also survived by her two sons, Richard Schuler of Jupiter, FL and William Schuler (Madeline) of Mineola.
